Mardi Gras: Everything you need to know and why you should go!

IMG_0605IMG_0604

Well it’s almost here again! Australia’s biggest parade; the annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.

I know some of you out there will be thinking “oh no, not again”; all those marching boys, drag queens and dykes on bikes.

But if you don’t like the sound of it then don’t go, simple as that.

Every time I go I have fun meeting people who come from all walks of life and from locations here, interstate and overseas.

They’re all in Sydney to see the spectacle and enjoy the feeling of everyone getting along together for at least one night a year – straight or gay.

If you’ve never been, go this year and have a look, it’s all a bit of fun – I guarantee you’ll leave with a smile on your face!

Sure there are some naughty bits, but nothing I’ve seen is offensive.

Those that argue that it stereotypes gays and lesbians could also argue that the rugby league grand finals or boxing matches stereotype straight people!

Seriously though, it’s the ONLY night of the year when those of us in the minority get to have a real voice – and put on a bloody good show at the same time.

Most of the massive crowd that line the parade route is heterosexual, but from what I’ve observed  it shows that we humans can all get along and have a great time together.

Make sure you don’t miss this incredible event – and you can get all the gossip on 2Day FM on Saturday afternoon when we become ’2Gay FM’ and Ellie Mobbs is made an honourary lesbian for the show!

We’ll be interviewing headline act at the giant after-party, Eurovision star Loreen, and chatting with Delta who’s also on the bill and the organisers who will be giving you tips on best vantage points.

Keep an eye out for the Marriage Equality float and make sure you give Jason and I a wave!

The parade starts at 7:45pm, but make sure you get there early to get the best views.

Watch out for Delta at the after party, I believe you will see another side to her that will blow you away.

I know it’s a cliche, but as they say “Happy Mardi Gras”!

Glee – why it’s on it’s last legs.

Anyone that is aware of my interests know I love musical theatre and pop culture.

In the past I’ve told you how much I enjoyed Glee when it premiered a few years ago, with its story of students struggling to make it at McKinley High.

I really loved the various story lines including Kurt’s relationship with his dad, and Rachael’s never ending quest for fame and fortune.

Arty’s performance of “Safety Dance” from his wheelchair is also a highlight from the early years of the show. And who could forget Kurt’s stunning version of a “House Is Not A Home”, Finn’s “Beth” or the ensemble number “New York State Of Mind”.

But recently I’ve lost faith in the show, with its characters all made-over to look like Vogue models, and their voices auto-tuned to the point where every song almost sounds like Cher’s “Believe”!

The storylines have lost their punch too. It now seems like the scriptwriters have strung together some lines just so they could fit another Britney Spears song into the episode.

It’s a real shame, because at its peak a few years ago Glee was one of the top rated shows in Australia. Today we learnt that Glee has been axed by Ten and moved to the digital channel after having the dubious honour of being one of the biggest prime time flops last week in Australian TV history.

Sorry to the loyal Gleeks, but this once great show is a shadow of it’s former self.

Barry Gibb: musical genius

It’s the morning after seeing Barry Gibb at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and I’m still on a high!

I went into the venue not knowing what to expect, now that Barry is a solo act and not on stage with his late-brothers Robin and Maurice. But from the moment Barry launched into Jive Talking, the sell-out crowd lapped up every single beautiful note. We didn’t miss his brothers till he paid tribute to them on the massive multimedia screens and joined them for a song or two.

It’s hard to mention a single highlight; there were too many. I loved the way Barry connected and spoke to the audience. I enjoyed the way he gave us a mixture of early hits like How Do You Mend A Broken Heart and less familiar but stunning tracks like Morning Of Your Life. The disco medley from Saturday Night Fever featuring Staying Alive was mind-blowing! And the haunting Lonely Days, Lonely Nights brought the house down.

It was also great to see Barry’s son Stephen make an appearance along with Maurice’s daughter Samantha.

Seeing the legend that is Barry Gibb live on stage was a very special experience, ranking up there among my all-time greatest concert moments.

Geoff’s views on gay marriage in the UK

In Britain the House of Commons has passed laws that would allow gay marriage – a great step forward! But would Geoff and Jason marry in the UK?

He really is “the voice”!

Taking my mum to see John Farnham at the Star in Sydney on Thursday night was an unforgettable experience.

I was amazed by the diversity of his fans of all ages and nationalities, and so many 2Day FM listeners!

When John walked on stage a thunderous roar swept the four thousand seat venue as he launched into the first of a massive catalogue of hits including “Don’t You Know It’s Magic”, “You’te The Voice”, “Age Of Reason”, “Pressure Down”, “Burn”, “Chain Reaction” and “That’s Freedom” to name just a few.

Remember this former Australian of the Year also holds the record for the biggest selling album of all time with “Whispering Jack”; beating the likes of  Madonna, ABBA and Michael Jackson.

On stage Farnsey was still at the top of his game, hitting every note while shaking hands with his fans, or receiving bouquets of flowers and gifts.

He also put to bed the myth that he announced his retirement 15 years ago! Actually he did give away the big arena shows so he could concentrate on doing smaller venues in one-off shows.

He had the audience eating out of his hands from start to finish and I really hope he returns to this venue to do a Las Vegas style show for a month or two.

Definitely one of the best concerts I have ever seen – it was one hell of a show!

My charity calendar

Back in 2007 I had fun doing a calendar for the Bobby Goldsmith foundation. With Mardi Gras just a few weeks away, here are some shots!
